The management of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, has shut down the institution indefinitely over lingering power and fuel crisis in the country.
Students of the school had protested over poor electricity supply and lack of water in the citadel of learning.
A circular issued by the management of the school on Thursday ordered the students to vacate the campus latest by 10am Friday.
The management said the Senate of the university at an emergency meeting held Thursday reviewed the situation on campus occasioned by the ongoing agitation of the students body over poor electricity and water supply in the community, and the difficulty faced by the large number of students living off campus to attend classes as a result of the fuel crisis.
“Senate noted that the problem of poor municipal services is a national issue that the governments at both State and Federal levels are addressing. However, in order to forestall breakdown of law and order on campus, senate resolved to take some decisions until the situation normalizes,” it said.
The Senate resolved that all academic activities on campus should be suspended with immediate effect and that “the university is therefore closed with immediate effect. All students are to vacate the various halls of residence immediately.
“No student should remain in the halls of residence after 10am on Friday, 8 April, 2016. A decision to re-open for normal academic activities will be taken as soon as municipal services improve.
“All members of the university community are enjoined to go about their normal activities as adequate security measures have been put in place,” the circular added.
