At least 36 people were arrested on another night of trouble in Lille which culminated in riot police repeatedly charging at England fans.
Tear gas, pepper spray and batons were used on English – and some Welsh – fans several times on a day when 16 people were taken to hospital.
After a tense stand-off at about 10pm, police rushed at a group of about 200 rowdy supporters who were singing and setting off flares outside a pub.
Sky’s Tom Parmenter, reporting from the scene, said “it got to the point where they wanted to move the fans on”.
But he said the French police were “over zealous and heavy handed”.
The clashes came as England and Wales prepare to do battle on the pitch in nearby Lens this afternoon.
Scuffles also broke out between a small number of English and French supporters.
Ex-England footballer Stan Collymore witnessed some of the trouble earlier in the day.
He said: “Somebody threw, not a grenade, something that went bang towards some England fans and the England fans have just run.”
Collymore also posted footage that appeared to show a man smashing wing mirrors off parked cars.
According to the AFP news agency, paramedics seemed to carry out cardiac massage on a fan lying on the ground, but their nationality was not clear.
An alcohol ban has been in place in an attempt to prevent a repeat of the violent scenes in Marseille, with bars closed and shops stopped from selling booze, but some fans in Lille appeared to be drinking nonetheless.
Security in the city has been beefed up, with more than 2,500 police, security guards and soldiers on duty over the next couple of days.
The unrest came as Russian fans set off a flare after a goal at their Euro 2016 game against Slovakia – two teams that are in the same Group B as England and Wales.
Russia, who were handed Russia a suspended disqualification by UEFA on Tuesday over crowd disturbances at its game against England in Marseille, lost the match 2-1.
Six England fans have been jailed in France, while another supporter was arrested on his return to the UK and has been banned from watching football in public for five years.
Some 43 Russian fans were detained after they were suspected of being involved in violent clashes in Marseille and the Stade Velodrome over the weekend.
