President Muhammadu Buhari has called for the establishment of a Commonwealth Committee to assist Nigeria and other countries battling terrorism to win, admitting that the countries have been badly affected. The President spoke at a banquet hosted by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, for Heads of State and Government participating in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta.
In a statement by the presidential spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina, while President expressing the hope that the committee would come on board before the next meeting of the body, also advocated for a fact finding trip to affected countries with a view to evolving practical strategies for more meaningful assistance.
He also called for urgent assistance do from advanced member-countries to help Nigeria and other developing nations President overcome the challenges of economic development, security, terrorism and corruption.
He said: “With the improvement of global communications, terrorism has no borders now. What happened recently in France had a profound effect on all of us, but very few countries realize that Nigeria has suffered terrorist casualties of over 10,000 killed in the last six years.
“Right now, we have over two million internally displaced persons, most of whom are women and children, and most of the children are orphans,” the President told the Queen and Commonwealth Heads of State and Government”.
