President Muhammadu Buhari will reward world champions, Golden Eaglets, African basketball champions, D’Tigers and the other teams that won laurels for Nigeria in 2015 in the third week of January.
Speaking at a parley with reporters in Lagos, the Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung also informed that members of the 1985 Golden Eaglets squad that won the first FIFA U-16 Kodak Cup were recently rewarded by President Buhari for their historic feat in China.
Observing that it was demoralising for athletes to go unrewarded after giving their all to win laurels for the country, the Minister said the present administration was going to do its best to encourage athletes to achieve their potentials by way of incentives and rewards.
“We frown at situations where you work and don’t get paid. Sports is a global earner and we must do our bit to encourage our youths who use it as a means of survival. They not only give us joy on the pitch or track or pool but also bring glory to this country, which is why we must always encourage them at every turn of the corner.
“In this line, President Buhari will be rewarding the Golden Eaglets, D’Tigers and other teams who won continental and international competitions for Nigeria last year. The ceremony will be taking place in the third week of January and all the athletes who have done this country proud will be rewarded by the President”, said Dalung.
