The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former Governor of Abia State, Theodore Orji at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
He was taken from the airport on Thursday to the commission’s office to answer questions over alleged misappropriation of state funds to the tune of N551 billion.
His son, Chinedu, who is the speaker of the State House of Assembly is also being quizzed by the EFCC after he showed up on learning that his father had been arrested.
Orji was arrested at the airport around 10.00am on Thursday.
Another of Orji’s son, Ogbonna is also being investigated with his father over misappropriation of public fund.
The EFCC added that sometime last year, Senator Orji had approached the agency and requested for the release of his travel documents to enable him go to Dubai for medical treatment.
However, the EFCC noted, the serving Senator failed to return the travel document.
The EFCC said it has asked Orji to report at the EFCC headquarters again on Friday for the continuation of his interrogation.
Meanwhile, the lawmaker, currently representing Abia Central Senatorial District at the Senate, has denied being detained.
He claimed that the EFCC officials only accosted him as he was on his way to London for a routine medical check up in London.
EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, however confirmed that Orji was grilled over allegation of fraud.
