Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, yesterday, signed a bill on the amendment of section 50 of the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law 2010, into law.
While signing the bill into law at the State House, Ikeja, the governor explained that the amendment became necessary following the wound-up of the World Bank-assisted project on the Lagos Metropolitan and Urban Development and Governance Project, LMDGP, last year.
The governor added that the amended law would empower Lagos State Urban Renewal Authority, LASURA, an agency created by the law, to take over the upgrade of slums and other uncompleted projects by LMDGP.
He noted that the agency would immediately commence slum regeneration and building redevelopment such as the reconstructed Oluwole Market in Lagos Island Local Government, construction of some blocks of flats at Adeniji Adele Estate and Ijora Badia among others.
Earlier, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye said that at inception, the law had specified that only a town planner could head LASURA, but the amendment would enable individuals with relevant experience to head the agency.
