At least four workers of the Lee Engineering Company have been confirmed dead after gunmen ambushed them on Monday on the Etekwuru-Assa Road in the Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.
Our correspondent gathered that the oil workers were on transit to their oil plant in Assa community when the hoodlums opened fire on them.
While four died on the spot, others suffered serious injuries.
Our correspondent had yet to ascertain the reason for the attack.
The National President of the Congress of Ohaji Youths, Emmanuel Ugorji, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.
He said a delegation, consisting of himself, community leaders and security agents, visited the scene.
Ugorji called on the state government to beef up security in the area, saying gunmen had been terrorising residents in recent times.
He said, “The first attack by this group was on Oilserve Company and the second was the kidnap of the Cluster Development Board Chairman, Godswill Uzomba, whose whereabouts has been unknown for about three months now and followed by the burning of ZEROC equipment at the Watersmith Industrial Park by a known criminal gang.”
The President General of Assa Autonomous Community, Bartholomew Obodo, urged the Federal Government to come to the rescue of his people.
A spokesperson for the police in the state, Micheal Abattam, said the command had commenced investigation into the attack.
