A final year male student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), popularly known as ‘Mayor’ was shot dead in what was suspected to cult-related incident at about 9 pm on Monday in his hostel.
The deceased, whose real name is yet to be known was killed in a hail of bullets unleashed on his by the yet to be identified gunman right inside his room in Hall 3 of the Ugbowo campus of the institution.
As at the time of filing this report, motive for the killing is not yet known, but a source said it may not be unconnected with reprisal killings by rival deadly secret cultists who are fighting for supremacy and other sundry issues.
The source, a student who did not want to be named, disclosed that there was commotion as jumped out of their beds and ran for their lives when the lone gunman opened fire, shattering the silence of the night.
Meanwhile, authorities of UNIBEN has condemned the the brutal and killing of Mayor.
The University’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Daisy Ehanire, who withheld the real name and department of the deceased, commiserated with the family and colleagues of the late student.
Ehanire while pleading with other students to be calm, noted that the police and other security agencies are working hard to fish out and arrest the suspected runaway killer.
This is even as she disclosed that the authorities of the University are also working closely with the internal security units in ensuring that such dastardly incident does not occur again within the institution’s campuses.
