THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Yobe State has suspended the distribution of Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) following the insecurity to lives and property in two affected local councils of Gujba and Gulani.
Speaking at the weekend at the INEC headquarters in Damaturu, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji Sadiq Abubakar Musa, said that the voters’ registration exercise would not hold in 246 polling units of Gujba and Gulani local councils of Yobe State.
Governor Ibrahim Gaidam however last Saturday at his Bukarti country home in Yunusari Local Council, had assured the people that despite the security challenges in the two councils, eligible voters would receive their PVCs.
His words: “We had already made special arrangements to ensure the distribution of voters’ cards despite the security challenges being faced by INEC and the people living in the affected two local councils of this state.”
While receiving his PVC, the governor said the exercise was necessary to allow eligible voters elect leaders of their choice, adding: “The state government and security operatives will do everything possible to ensure that no eligible voter is disenfranchised.”
He, therefore, urged people of the state to ensure timely collection of their voters’ cards, just as he called on those who have not registered to do so without any hesitation. Agency report
