The Lagos State Government has announced temporary road closures across major corridors in the state ahead of the inauguration of critical infrastructure projects scheduled for April 8 and 9, 2026, urging motorists to plan alternative routes to avoid traffic disruptions.
In a travel advisory issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation and obtained by The PUNCH, the government said the restrictions are necessary to ensure safety and smooth movement during the commissioning activities.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the partial closures would affect key locations in Ikeja, Ojota, Ajegunle and Victoria Island, as the state prepares to inaugurate major projects.
“The Lagos State Government wishes to inform the motoring public of partial road closures for the commissioning events of critical infrastructure projects on Wednesday, 8th April, 2026, and Thursday, 9th April, 2026,” the statement read.
It added that the temporary traffic restrictions were aimed at maintaining order and ensuring the safety of residents and participants during the events.
“These events require temporary road closures in specific areas to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of proceedings.
“Motorists are advised to plan their movement and avoid the affected corridors during the designated times to minimise traffic disruptions and travel delays.”
According to the advisory, the inauguration of the Opebi-Mende Link Bridge on Wednesday, April 8, will take place between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., with traffic expected to be affected around Opebi, Allen Avenue, Ikeja and Ojota.
“All motorists transiting this corridor during the specified hours should seek alternative routes to avoid congestion and ensure timely arrival at their destinations,” the statement noted.
The government also announced that two major events would be held on Thursday, April 9, within different time frames.
The first event, scheduled between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., is the inauguration of the Tolu Schools Complex in Ajegunle, which is expected to affect traffic around Olodi Apapa and surrounding areas.
“Motorists operating in these localities are strongly advised to plan alternative routes and allow additional time for their journeys during this period,” the statement added.
A second event will be held later in the day, between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., at Eko Hotel in Victoria Island, with motorists advised to avoid the corridor or expect delays due to increased security and traffic control measures.
“Motorists in the Victoria Island corridor are advised to avoid the area during these hours or to exercise caution and expect potential delays,” it added.
The government said personnel of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority would be deployed to all affected routes to manage vehicular movement and assist commuters.
“The public is urged to cooperate fully with traffic management personnel and observe all instructions to facilitate the smooth movement of vehicles along the affected corridors.”
The state government appealed for patience and understanding from road users, assuring residents that the measures are temporary and necessary for the successful execution of the inauguration programme.
“The Lagos State Government appreciates the cooperation, patience and understanding of all road users during these events,” Osiyemi said.
