Lagos shuts churches, hotels over noise pollution

The Lagos State Government has shut down a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, a Celestial Church, as well as several hotels and event centres due to noise pollution.

The state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced this in a post on X on Wednesday, stating that the closures were part of efforts to address environmental violations.

“In a bid to tackle noise pollution and other environmental offences, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) took action yesterday (Tuesday), closing several establishments across different parts of the state.

“This enforcement drive, targeting areas such as Ogudu, Gbagada, Iyana Ejigbo, Isolo, Ajao Estate, Oshodi, Ilasamaja, and Okota, forms part of LASEPA’s ongoing efforts to uphold environmental standards and protect public health.

“The affected establishments include Honourable Lounge & Lodging, Redeemed Christian Church of God, Celestial Church of God, OMA Night Club and Lounge, Bridge Spot Bar, Okiki Event Centre and Hall, Emota Paradise Hotel (Phase 2), CF Hotel & Suites, House 27 Hotel & Suites, Echo Spring Hotel, and Smile T Continental Hotel,” Wahab wrote.

This action follows similar measures taken three months ago when the government sealed off Landcraft Industries Nigeria and the Word of Light Christ Ministry (Camp of Light) for noise and environmental pollution-related offences.

In August, Wahab stated that Landcraft Industries Nigeria, located in Odogunyan, Ikorodu, was sealed off due to severe environmental pollution, while the Word of Light Christ Ministry (Camp of Light), also in Ikorodu, was closed for noise pollution.

“The enforcement operation, led by Deputy Director of the Enforcement Department, Babatunde Gbenga, aimed to ensure compliance with the Lagos State Environmental Laws of 2017,” the commissioner said.
