Don’t protest your colleague’s death – BUK warns students, plans pedestrian bridge

More universities have announced their resumption dates, as some others await resolution from their chapters’ congresses.

This is sequel to the suspension of the eight-month strike embarked upon on February 14, by the Academic Staff Union of Universities on Friday.

The management of Bayero University, Kano, has announced October 24, 2022, as the resumption date for academic activities.

A statement by BUK’s Deputy Registrar, Public Affairs, Lamara Garba said the university’s management, after its meeting, on Thursday, October 13, 2022, approved the resumption date.

“Consequently, students are to resume academic activities with effect from Monday, October 24, 2022,’’ the statement stated.

Similarly, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka has announced October 22, as the resumption date for academic activities.

A memo signed by the university’s Registrar dated October 14, indicated that students are to return to campus on Saturday, October 22, 2022, while lectures for the second semester will resume on Monday, October 24.

However, ASUU Chapter, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, has disclosed that the union is waiting for the outcome of the school Senate meeting on the resumption of classes.

Speaking on Monday, the chapter’s Chairman, Prof Muhammed Almustapha, said, “Based on the rules and regulations guiding university education, academic activities can only resume after the meeting of the Senate where school calendars will be approved accordingly.”

Other universities who have announced their resumption dates following the suspension of the strike by ASUU include Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye – October 17, 2022; Bayero University, Kano – October 24, 2022; Alex Ekweme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike – October 24, 2022; University of Nigeria, Nsukka – October 22, 2022; and Federal University Owerri – October 17, 2022.

Others are Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike – October 17, 2022; Sule Lamido University, Karfin-Hausa – October 31, 2022; University of Port Harcourt, Port-Harcourt – October 17, 2022.
