The Enugu State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency
(NDLEA) has described Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as a pillar of support in its fight against illicit drug use and trafficking in the state.
The chairman and chief executive of the agency in the state, Barrister Anthony Ohanyere, gave the commendation in Enugu at the commemoration of this year’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Ohanyere, who represented the national chairman and chief executive of
the agency, Colonel Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah (rtd), said: “Since
Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi assumed office as the number one citizen of
this state in 2015, His Excellency has been striving to give us all that we need in this war against drug abuse, illicit drug and trafficking in the state. We immensely thank you for being our pillar of support and a great hope for us.”
Urging other well meaning individuals to emulate the governor in the fight against the social malaise, he counselled parents that “listening to children and youths is the first step to helping them stay healthy and safe”.
Responding, Governor Ugwuanyi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment towards the war against illicit drug and trafficking in dangerous substances.
The governor who was represented by his deputy, Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo, said “the present administration in Enugu State will continue in partnering your agency in the noble fight against this dreaded monster called drug abuse, illicit drug and trafficking in drug and other dangerous substances”.
Noting that use of illicit drugs could lead to mental illness and breed vices such as armed robbery, prostitution, among others, he urged parents to monitor their children’s peer group.
In a paper delivered at the occasion, a psychologist with the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, Dr. U.C. Nduanya, said listening to children has become an imperative given that they “face a lot of challenges at their formative age”.
