Nigeria must get security right – Obasanjo

Obasanjo calls for unity among Yorubas

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that one of the things Nigeria needs to focus on for its stability is the issue of security.

Obasanjo, who was in Bayelsa State on Friday to inaugurate some projects carried out by Governor Seriake Dickson, spoke in Yenagoa, the state capital,  where he also commended the governor for the peace being experienced in the state.

“I do not know how you have done it, maybe we should all come to learn under your tutelage,” Obasanjo said. “This is so because one of the things we need to do and do well today in this country today is the issue of security. Security is stability.

“The point is this; if one state in Nigeria is peaceful, secured and safe, it is an example to others and it goes a long way because the aggregate peacefulness and security are what makes for peace, security and stability of our country.”

The former president, who inaugurated the Bayelsa State Drug Distribution Company, the state Diagnostic Centre and other projects, also expressed satisfaction with the level of development in the state.

“Here, I have seen the real transformation and if there is a place where you can say, come and see the transformation taking place, this is one place in the country,” he added.

Obasanjo also suggested that young people should be accommodated in the nation’s political leadership, saying, “We have to make allowance for them and we must also make provision for them.”

When he visited the state traditional council, the state’s citizenship and a chieftaincy title were conferred on him.

Meanwhile, three former Ministers of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, Mr. Labaran Maku and Mr. John Odey, have stressed the importance of information dissemination in democratic governance.

They said this on Thursday during the inauguration of Bayelsa Information House in Yenagoa as part of the activities to commemorate the sixth anniversary of Governor Seriake Dickson in office.

Gana, who unveiled the building, commended the government for attaching importance to information dissemination in the state.

The state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, promised that the media family in Bayelsa had the duty to put the edifice to good use.
