The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has thanked Ndigbo and Nigerians for coming out enmasse to honour the departed Igbo leader and Nigerian statesman, Dr Alex Ekwueme.
The President General of the group Chief Nnia Nwodo also lauded the naming of the Federal University in Abakiliki after him.He assured that Dr Ekwueme’s place in history is assured and asked Ndigbo to continue to live by the ideals of the departed icon.
In another development the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations of Nigeria, COCSON has congratulated the naming of federal University in Ndufo Alike in Ebonyi state after Dr Ekwueme.
The National President of the group Chuks Ibegbu lauded President Buhari for that gesture but advised Igbo states to also do something in that line to remember the colossus.
He tasked Nigerians especially politicians to adopt the politics without bitterness posture of Dr Ekwueme.
In recognition of Dr Ekwueme’s patriotic and pan Nigeria nature, the coalition has named its National Secretariat in Abuja, Dr Alex Ekwueme Place.
Also commending the Federal Government for the honour done Ekwueme, Member representing Orumba North constituency at the Anambra State House of Assembly, Chief Romanus Obi expressed happiness over the renaming of Federal University, Ndufu, after Dr Alex Ekwueme. The university is sited at Alike, Ikwo in Ebonyi.
Obi who spoke to newsmen at Oko, during funeral rites of the late former Vice-President of Nigeria, Dr Ekwueme said his immortalisation was apt, given his contributions to national development.
The lawmaker said he has earlier sponsored a bill in the assembly seeking the renaming of any of the nation’s institution after the elder statesman.
Also commending the FG’s effort, Coordinator, Dr Alex Ekwueme Burial Committee in the old Aguata union, Mr Uchenna Okonkwo–Okom called for the upgrading of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko to a university in honour of the late former vice president.
Describing Ekwueme as “a humble great leader,” of the Igbo people, Oguefi said he expected Nigerians to tap from the fountain of his wealth of experience, which impacted positively on the nation’s development.
