Tension is heightened as the political atmosphere in Osun is becoming more intolerable with violence gaining ground by the day.
Shootings recording casualties have occurred in some parts of the state in recent times- a youth was killed in Ikire a couple of months ago by gunmen suspected to have been sponsored by politicians; an Accord Party Chairman was also shot at in Osogbo about a week ago while shootings in about four places occurred yesterday (Tuesday 6 June 2026), reportedly leading to one death and two others injured.
Yesterday’s shootings occurred as supporters of the Accord Party and the All Progressives Congress (APC) violently clashed in Owode-Ede, Aisu, Olaiya, and Oke-Fia areas of the state capital.
Residents scampered for safety with many market men and women at the Owode-Ede Market hurriedly closing shops and running to avoid being hit by strayed bullets.
Sources said the Tuesday’s incidents were ignited when a motorcade conveying APC members, allegedly driving dangerously along Ode Omu-Osogbo Road, were attacked by some Accord Party members.
“Security operatives attached to the convoy were shooting into the air to disperse the attackers at the Aisu junction,” an eyewitness said, adding that one person was killed during the incident while two others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital.
It took the intervention of security operatives who came in their Hilux pick-up vehicles and fired warning shots into the air in the areas to disperse troublemakers.
The police authorities in the state on Wednesday announced that an investigation had been launched into the incidents, urging residents to go about their normal businesses and assuring all that measures had been put in place to ensure safety of life and property.
“Following reports of the incidents, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, mnips, immediately directed the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), alongside the department of operations and intelligence units of the command to commence a thorough investigation aimed at arresting, and prosecuting those responsible.
“The Command wishes to reassure residents that all necessary steps have been taken as normalcy has been restored to the areas and measures have been implemented to prevent any recurrence. Security has been reinforced in the affected areas, while intensive intelligence-led operations are ongoing to fish out the perpetrators and their sponsors regardless of societal or political status.
“The injured victims were promptly evacuated to medical facilities by our officers for treatment and are currently responding positively to medical care,” Police statement released on Wednesday by the command’s PPRO Ojelabi said. – PM News.
