The Salu of Edunabon, Oba Kehinde Oladepo, has called for increased investment in the agriculture sector to boost food production, as 2,000 households in his community benefitted from a free food distribution initiative.
The beneficiaries, including elderly women, housewives, members of the Hausa community, and unemployed youths, received food packs containing grains and garri under the Feeding the Community initiative, sponsored by Mr. Tobiloba Oyebamiji.
They also benefited from a free medical outreach provided by the donor.
Speaking on the initiative, Oyebamiji emphasised the link between food security and national stability.
“We are feeding about 2,000 households. We have over 1,000 packs of rice, 300 packs of beans, 300 packs of garri, and 200 packs of red oil, among others,” he stated.
“The cost of these items is over N15 million. We are also targeting 500 people for the medical outreach, focusing on elderly residents. After the tests, beneficiaries will receive free medication. The goal is to improve the well-being of the less privileged, and this is not politically motivated.”
Commending the initiative, Oba Oladepo urged well-meaning Nigerians to support efforts to make food more accessible.
“I sincerely commend the financier of this initiative. He is not from this community, yet he is providing food items for those in need. He is not a politician, nor is he seeking any favour,” the monarch noted.
“Through initiatives like this, we are encouraging massive local food production, which will positively impact the economy in the long run. The added medical outreach also complements government efforts in healthcare delivery.”
The initiative comes at a time when rising food prices and economic hardship have made access to basic food items increasingly difficult for many Nigerian households.
