The Deputy speaker at the Plateau House of Assembly (PLSHA), Yusuf Gagdi said he would pay SSCE registration fees of the 557 final year secondary school students in his constituency, Kantan State Constituency.
Gagdi told his constituents during an interface on Saturday in Kanam, that he had met with the schools and had begun the exercise.
He explained that the scholarship was to relieve the parents and ensure that no one missed the examination because his or her parents could not afford the fees.
Gagdi said the gesture was to stimulate the younger generation to embrace education toward realising their full potential.
He lamented the “biting poverty” amongst his people, and declared that the youths there required such assistance to forge on.
“I know how my poor parent suffered to send me to school; I cannot forget the hurdles I passed through to be where I am today.
“It was indeed a tough and rough journey.
“My people were peasants, and even basic feeding was a serious problem, so paying school fees was just a huge luxury no one could afford,” he said.
“So, I have taken it upon myself to pay the SSCE fees of all the 557 final year secondary school students in Kantana constituency and this is costing N7 million,” he said.
”This money is not from any government; it is from my meagre resources but it is a sacrifice worth it because I am investing on the future of the society,” he said.
“During campaigns, all I promised my people that I will never let them down; this is one of the steps to give them a sense of and I will continue to do even more to ensure they have good governance,” Gagdi pledged.
