Police arrest officer over Delta shooting, transfer case to Force HQ

ASP Nuhu Usman

The Delta State Police Command has arrested and transferred a police officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, to the Force Headquarters, Abuja, for disciplinary action following the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, stated this in a statement issued on Tuesday following public outrage on social media.

He said the incident occurred on Sunday, April 26, 2026, after operatives attached to Area Command Effurun received intelligence from members of the public about the suspect.

“The unfortunate incident occurred when operatives attached to Area Command Effurun received credible intelligence from members of the public regarding the deceased, who was reportedly apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition,” the statement said.

Edafe stated that officers were deployed to take the suspect into custody, but the situation took a tragic turn.

“However, the police officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect,” it added.

Edafe said that following the incident, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the incident and ordered the immediate arrest of the officer.

He added that the commissioner described the incident as an extrajudicial killing of the 28-year-old suspect.

“Upon receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police directed the Area Commander, Effurun, to immediately arrest ASP Nuhu Usman and transfer him to the State Headquarters, Asaba, for necessary disciplinary action,” the statement noted.

The command’s spokesperson added that the officer has since been moved to Abuja and reiterated the command’s commitment to professionalism and accountability.

“The officer has since been queried and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he will appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee, currently in session, for immediate disciplinary sanction and prosecution.

“The Command, in line with the policy of the Nigeria Police Force, emphasises respect for the rule of law, human rights, professionalism, accountability and public trust. The Command further reaffirms its zero tolerance for lawlessness, recklessness and extra-judicial conduct,” it said.

Edafe added that CP Oyeniyi also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them of justice.

“The Commissioner of Police extends his sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and assures the bereaved family that the Command is fully committed to ensuring that justice is served,” the statement added.

He, therefore, urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding as efforts continue to ensure accountability in the case.

Public outrage erupted following the emergence of a disturbing video on social media showing the cold-blooded public killing of a bound suspect in broad daylight by police officers in Delta State.

The 90-second video, which was posted on X on Tuesday by #Dee_9889, depicts a scene of extreme violence involving the policemen in civilian attire operating beside a vehicle clearly labelled “Nigeria Police Force, Effurun Area Command.”

In the footage, a suspect is seen on the ground with his hands and legs tied.

In his helpless state, he is seen pleading for his life and offering to cooperate with the armed men, whom he repeatedly addressed as “officers.”

“Officers, abeg,” the man pleaded in the clip. “I’ll tell you everything. It was my friend who deceived me.”

As the suspect provided information regarding his friend’s whereabouts, shouting, “He’s at Sapele. I’ll take you to him,” one of the armed men discharged his firearm into the man’s leg.

“He’s at Sapele. I don’t know anything. “Please. I’ll take you to him. He’s at Sapele. I’ll take you to him, officer. Officer, I didn’t know,” the man wailed loudly.

As the victim continued to scream and beg, the same armed individual fired a second shot, this time towards the man’s head in full view of onlookers.

The body was subsequently carried into the waiting police van by two other men before the team drove away from the scene.
