The Senate, on Tuesday, ordered the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Solomon Arase to, a matter of urgency reinstate, promote and pay all areas due to Sergeant Amos Olaniyan, who was verbally suspended from the Nigerian Police Force 21 years ago.
According to the Senate, the IGP must ensure that Olaniyan was fully re-integrated into the Police Force with a letter of reinstatement and apology, even as he said all his dues including promotions and entitlements be fully paid.
These resolutions were sequel to a petition presented by Senator Solomon Adeola from Lagos West on behalf of one of his constituents, Amos Olaniyan on October 6, 2015.
The petition was subsequently forwarded to the Senator Samuel Anyanwu-led Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions and the Committee in the presentation of its report yesterday raised the two recommendations that were adopted by the Senators.
Adeola, while presenting the petition said Olaniyan was verbally suspended in 1994 on a baseless allegation of bribery from which an Orderly Room Trial discharged and acquitted him but the Police refused to recall him even as he was in possession of his identity card and uniform.
Reacting to the findings and resolution of the Senate, Senator Adeola, expressed joy that at last, justice has been done to his constituent who had suffered for 21 years without any redress, added that he will always fight for the interest of all his constituents and Nigerians.
He said; “I was greatly disturbed when I saw his petition as I did not believe this could happen to any citizen of Nigeria.
“This was after he had written petitions to previous Inspector Generals of Police and the Police Service Commission and even late President Umaru Yar’adua to no avail.”
In his remarks, Senate President Bukola Saraki, who noted that Nigerians who cannot afford legal fees should seek redress at the Senate, stressed that the Senate Police Affairs Committee would ensure compliance with the resolution and others and report back to the upper chambers in two weeks. – Vanguard.
