Source uncovers plot to instigate media against Governor Ugwuanyi

Facts have emerged over a clandestine plot by some political opponents of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State to stage a campaign of calumny against him and his administration’s policy direction.

At the centre of the plot is a politician from the same Senatorial District with the governor who contested the governorship primary election with him and lost. He was also a former member of the National Assembly and had worked in the media for decades before venturing into politics.

It was alleged that the politician enjoys enormous goodwill from Chief Executives of some media houses in the country who were his colleagues during his days in the media, and has been leveraging on their relationship to sponsor and instigate negative and false reports against the governor in order to undermine his laudable vision for the state and ridicule him in the public for his selfish political agenda.

It was also revealed that the detractor pulling the strings from behind enlisted the support and assistance of a former Commissioner for Information in the state who is his close ally and a former editor in a foremost national newspaper.  Another journalist with the same newspaper who comes from the same locality with the politician was recently deployed to the state ostensibly to play out his master’s script. It was disclosed that the politician was instrumental to the emergence of the former editor as a commissioner in the state during the past administration and his allegiance and blind loyalty to him have been unquestionable.

A reliable source who was privy to the plot said the politician was behind the failed moves to incite Enugu workers against Governor Ugwuanyi as well as the recent series of strange negative editorials in national dailies against the governor over the false allegation by the labour union of free Prado jeeps to the House of Assembly members. The source said the fact that some of the editorials came even after labour leaders had retracted their uninformed statement and apoligised to the governor smacked clearly of calculated plots to smear the governor’s image and undermine overwhelming supporters and goodwill he enjoys among the ordinary citizens of the State.

It was also uncovered that the politician recently held a nocturnal meeting with his cohorts in his Enugu residence where they perfected the plot to roll out the unrelenting smear campaign. The source added that the politician during the meeting, which attracted some political elements who lost primary elections or failed to secure political appointments as yet, boosted that he would make the state ungovernable and hurt the current administration.

It was reliably gathered that a huge amount money was voted for the project and that one of those who used to benefit when the state was in turmoil, donated the larger part of the funds earmarked for the project, stressing that the governor blocked his source of livelihood.

The source derided the antics of the opposition candidate behind the smear campaign, which he said was not surprising given his wide-range of unpopularity, lack of conscience, and a defined agenda for the development and emancipation of Enugu State.

It maintained that, like in the previous occasions, their plot was bound to fail and boomerang against its originator, as the people of Enugu State have unwavering confidence in the ability of Governor Ugwuanyi to lead the state aright, stressing that no amount of blackmail will dissuade them from supporting him.

On the alleged SUVs for House of Assembly members, the source revealed that the labour movement in the state expressed their displeasure and regrets over how their misinformed allegation was hijacked by some political elements in the state to distract the governor, even when the unions have back-tracked on the allegation and tendered unreserved apology to the governor.

It warned the detractor and his clique of disgruntled  elements not to disrupt the prevailing peace and development efforts in the State and advised the general public to ignore such antics from a politician known for “his crass desperation to occupy the Lion building by any possible means”.
