Armed policemen have been deployed to ensure that fresh fight does not break out between Ife and Modakeke people in Osun State.

Our correspondent gathered that policemen deployed in the area to ensure peace were still monitoring the situation as at Sunday.

The fresh crisis which has been nipped in the bud was said to have started about two weeks ago.

It was gathered that tension was high along Alapata, Amokegun and Oyolowa on Thursday as residents of the areas were said to have taken up arms and blocked all the roads leading to the areas.

A resident of Modakeke who pleaded not to be named alleged that many indigenes of the town who are farmers had not been allowed to return to their farm since the end of the last crisis.

He added that some people from Ife always come and prevent Modakeke people from harvesting their cash crops. He added that youths from the town had vowed that they would resist such practice henceforth.

According to him, the people of Ife are demanding that Modakeke indigene who are farming on the such land should pay tribute.

However, a politician from Ife debunked the claim, saying the land on which Modakeke people were farming belonged to Ile Ife and they should pay tribute on it.

He also blamed the new crisis brewing among the two communities on Modakeke but he said that he hoped that the issues would be resolved quickly.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Osun State, Mr. Folasade Odoro, when contacted said that the command had deployed policemen in the area to ensure that there was no breakdown of law and order.

She added that normalcy had been restored to the area while calling on residents of the two towns to allow peace to reign.

She said, “We are on top of the situation. Our men are there. We are monitoring situation there.

“There was no killing. We are taking preemptive measure to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order.”

It will be recalled that the location of a local government headquarters sparked a dispute between indigenes of the two towns in 1997 and war which claimed many lives and property,it was brought to a peaceful end in 2001. Punch

The Coordinator, Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Prof. Abdulsalami Nasidi, said more than 600 Nigerians registered as volunteers in the international team to control Ebola Virus Disease in West Africa. He made the disclosure while fielding questions at the 2014 ministerial press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday. He said the volunteers comprised health workers, journalists and others. Nasidi said Nigeria remained committed to supporting the control of Ebola spread in West Africa, hence the number of volunteers registered to join the fight against the disease. The coordinator, however, did not give the exact date when the team would commence its assignment but said Nigeria was prepared to lead the international response team. He said “I want to announce to this gathering that over 600 Nigerian doctors, nurses, laboratory scientists, field epidemiologists and other categories of experts, including journalists, have registered to join the international team on Ebola. “This strong team is an indication that Nigeria is committed to leading the fight against Ebola in West Africa.’’ The NCDC coordinator said that the Federal Government’s Treatment and Research Group had helped in developing a national response plan, stressing that implementation of the plan would soon commence. He added that the national plan was conceived to help Nigeria to prepare in the event of an outbreak of the disease in any part of the country. According to him, Nigeria now has a strategic plan in place that will guide workers in controlling any outbreak of Ebola and other emerging diseases in the country. The coordinator said that the plan put together was in acknowledgement of the fact that Nigeria was still at risk of another outbreak of the disease. He added that until the last reported case of Ebola in the world was brought under control, Nigeria would not relent in its efforts to combat the disease. The Federal Government had offered the services of the coordinator of the NCDC to lead the international response team to other parts of West Africa. (NAN)
