Uber has announced the shutdown of its operations in Nigeria following a review of its business, with the ride-hailing company saying it will cease operations in the country effective September 2, 2026.
The company disclosed this in a message to its drivers on Wednesday, informing them that they would no longer receive rider trip requests through the Uber app from the effective date.
“We have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective September 2, 2026.
“From this date, you will no longer be able to receive rider trip requests through the Uber app,” Uber said.
The company described the development as “difficult news” and expressed appreciation to drivers for their contributions to its operations in Nigeria over the years.
“We know this is heavy news, and we want to express our deepest gratitude to you for being a part of our journey in Nigeria,” the company said.
Uber also acknowledged the role played by its drivers in providing transportation services to residents, noting that their commitment had helped keep the city moving.
“For years, your commitment to your riders has kept this city moving safely and affordably,” it said.
The company said it was proud of the impact its platform had made in Nigeria, describing its role as a technology bridge connecting riders with independent drivers.
“We are so proud of what the platform has been able to achieve in Nigeria, serving as the technology bridge between riders and your independent services,” Uber said.
The company, however, did not disclose further details on the reasons behind the decision to wind down its Nigerian operations in the notice to drivers.
Uber said its Help Centre would remain available to assist drivers with questions relating to the development until September 24, 2026.
“Our Help Center will remain open until 24 September ’26 to assist you with any questions,” the company said.
The announcement brings an end to Uber’s operations in Nigeria and marks a major development in the country’s ride-hailing industry, where app-based transportation services have become an important part of urban mobility.
The company concluded its message by thanking drivers for their participation in its Nigerian operations.
“Thank you for being a part of the Uber community,” Uber said.
