The Federal Government has approved N14.7billion for the provision of engineering infrastructure to Gidan Daya Urban Renewal Site, Gidan Daya Area of Kurudu District in the Federal Capital Territory.
The completion period for the contract will be 36 months and will generate employment opportunities for at least 25 professionals, 40 technicians and at least 800 unskilled labourers.
Minister of Information, Labaran Maku; and the Minister of State, FCT, Olajumoke Akinjide, told State House correspondents this at the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo.
According to Akinjide, the Gidan Daya Area where those who will be dislodged from the Nyanya Labour Camp which has since been declared unfit for human habitation by the United Nations Habitat will be relocated.
The Labour Camp built over 30 years ago specifically for the labourers who built the FCT had become overcrowded with poor sanitary condition.
The 152 hectares of land in Gidan Daya along the Jikwoyi-Karshi Road will house 7000 families to be relocated from the camp.
She said, “The council approved the award for contract for the provision of engineering infrastructure to Gidan Daya Urban Renewal Site, Gidan Daya Area of Kurudu District of the FCT.
“The FCT Satellite Towns Development Agency is mandated to provide infrastructural facilities and social amenities to the Satellite Towns and rural areas of the FCT.
“In its desire to discharge the mandate, the council approved the award of the contract in favour of Messrs Nairda Limited in the sum of N14.billion with completion period of 36 months.”
Akinjide said some of the services she said would be provided for the about 50,000 inhabitants of the area are roads, electricity, water supply, sewage system,
schools, markets, police station and fire station among others.
She added that the area would also accommodate some new residents apart from those to be relocated.
Akinjide further stated that by the time 8,054 flats are developed, the current labour camp would undergo urban renewal and be available for use by the administration.
Maku said the council commended President Goodluck Jonathan for the impact of his electoral reforms as witnessed in the recent governorship election in Ekiti State.
He said the council believed that the outcome was an affirmation of the reforms.
