British boxer Anthony Joshua was released from a hospital in Lagos, Nigeria, following a fatal car crash earlier this week that killed two of his friends.
“Anthony Joshua was discharged from hospital late this afternoon though heavy hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends he was deemed clinical fit to recuperate from home,” the Lagos and Ogun state governments said in a statement posted on X.
His strength coach, Sina Ghami, and trainer Latif Ayodele died Monday when their vehicle hit a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The former world heavyweight champion suffered minor injuries and had been under observation at Lagoon Hospital.
After leaving the hospital on Wednesday, Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home to pay respects as the bodies of his friends were “being prepared for repatriation.”
Fresh off his high-profile victory over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in a Netflix-backed bout, Joshua was spending time in Nigeria, his parents’ homeland, when the crash happened.
The Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) in Ogun state said preliminary investigations showed the car Joshua and the others were traveling in was moving at excessive speed and had burst a tire before the crash.
The driver of the car had also been discharged from the hospital and was being questioned by the police.
A Nigerian newspaper, The Guardian, cited a senior police officer who said he “could be prosecuted for reckless driving,” but gave no further details.
