Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has been released from prison in Benin Republic.
This was announced in a statement issued by the the Umbrella body of Yoruba Self-determination Groups, Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide.
According to the statement signed by the group’s Communications Secretary, Maxwell Adeleye, Igboho was released to the leader of the group, Banji Akintoye on Monday.
Akintoye described the release of Igboho as “a triumph of truth over darkness in Yorubaland.”
His lawyer, Yomi Aliyyu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), however, said Igboho was only released from jail for medical reasons.
He also revealed the role played by Professor Wole Soyinka and leader of Ilana Yoruba, Professor Banji Akintoye.
Aliyyu made the clarification in a message to Igboho supporters, which he posted on Facebook on Monday night.
“I am to inform all the followers of Chief Sunday Adeyemo a.k.a Igboho Oosa that he has been released from prison to his medical practitioners under the agreement that he should neither leave the medical centre nor Cotonou for any reason.
“Praises should be given to two prominent Yoruba personalities to wit Prof Wole Soyinka and Prof Akintoye for this turn around in our client’s matter”.
The Department of State Services had stormed Sunday Igboho’s Soka residence on July 1, 2021 and killed two of his aides.
The DSS also arrested 12 of his aides who were later released after months in detention at its headquarters in Abuja.
Igboho, however, fled Nigeria after he was declared wanted by the secret police for allegedly stockpiling arms and ammunition to destabilise Nigeria through calls for secession.
Subsequently, he was arrested by the Interpol at an airport in Cotonou on July 19, 2021
