Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho opened the scoring in the 11th minute following a slick team move.
Barcelona were awarded a penalty on the half-hour mark after consultation with the video assistant referee and Suarez stepped up to doubled their advantage.
Real fought back after the break and pulled a goal back through Marcelo.
Real missed a couple of chances to equalize before Barcelona restored their two-goal advantage on a Suarez header in the 75th minute.
The Uruguayan striker completed his hat trick in the 82nd minute.
Substitute Arturo Vidal scored the 5th, with four minutes remaining.
Barcelona now lead the standings with 21 points. Real Madrid are 10th with 14 points.
