As part of the initiatives of the Enugu State Government to ensure a more decent and efficient service delivery by the traffic enforcement unit, the state Ministry of Transport today organised a training workshop for traffic officials in the state.
Flagging off the workshop, the State Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Vitus Okechi called on security agencies to end the vandalism of traffic light infrastructure in the state.
Hon. Okechi regretted that the ugly experience of the vandals had posed a serious threat to the efforts of the state government to fully actualize its noble vision of effective and efficient operation of traffic control light system in the state.
The commissioner noted that the re-launched traffic enforcement programme was aimed at rendering quality service to the public and ensure safety of lives. He added that the workshop was also targeted at empowering the officials with requisite knowledge and expertise to deliver quality service to the public as well as promote an inter-personal relationship between the traffic officials and road users.
While urging the participants to take advantage of the workshop to improve on their service, the commissioner urged members of the public to have confidence in the ability of the traffic personnel to discharge their duties satisfactorily and with all sense of responsibility and decorum.
Hon. Okechi disclosed that the state government had put in place necessary measures to checkmate all forms of irregularities or misconduct, warning that any official found wanting will surely face the full wrath of the law.
“I plead with all the security agencies in Enugu State to assist the ministry in halting this criminality. We need them to secure these facilities because we cannot be moving around at night”, he stated.
On the attitude of the traffic officials, he said “we expect attitude change; they should be friendly to the masses, that’s the main reason the present government is carrying out this reform.”
He added that “the drivers too should see them as friends, not as enemies, they are there to ensure safety.”
On frequent confrontation of the officials by some motorists, the commissioner urged the traffic officials to be calm in the midst of provocation, stressing “don’t fight with anybody; report to the government when you face any attack or molestation.”
Resource persons at the workshop, who were drawn from various security agencies and the ministry’s top officials, trained the traffic men in the area of ethics, road signs, traffic signs, among others.
