Political party chairmen in Enugu State and candidates contesting various seats in the forthcoming general elections have signed a peace accord, pledging to maintain peace with their supporters before, during and after the elections.
The exercise, which took place at the state police headquarters, was witnessed by the Assistant Inspector General of police A.I.G A.U. Gwary and the state Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Adamu Mohammed, among other senior police officers.
The peace accord signed by all the political chairmen and their candidates, read: “That we, the undersigned candidates and chairmen of political parties in the state contesting the general elections of 2015, are desirous of taking proactive measures to prevent electoral violence before, during and after the elections.
“That we are anxious about the maintenance of a peaceful environment for the 2015 general elections, reaffirming our commitment to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“That we are desirous of promoting the unity and corporate existence of Nigeria as indivisible entity; determined to avoid any conduct or behaviour that will endanger the political stability and national security of Nigeria.
“That we are determined to place national interest above personal and partisan concern, reaffirming commitment to fully abide by all rules and regulations as laid down in the legal framework for elections in Nigeria.”
