The Supervising Minister of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, has called on stakeholders in the educational subsector and corporate organisations in the country to join hands with the Federal Government in curbing the menace of mathematics failure in schools.
He made the call yesterday in an address on the occasion of the 2014 Cowbell National Secondary Schools Mathematics prize giving ceremony at the Le Meridien Ibom Hotels and Golf Resorts, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
According to him, “it is a known fact that mathematics is today seen as a nightmare by our students. This phobia has been reflected in the poor performance of students in internal and external examinations.”
He said to stem the tide of this downward trend in the study of mathematics, the Federal Government has directed the Federal Ministry of Education and all stakeholders, among others, to leave no stone unturned in a bid to reverse the negative trend.
Wike, who was represented by Mrs Chioma Philips, Director, Federal Inspection Services in the ministry, commended Promosidor Nigeria Ltd, makers of Cowbell Milk, for taking the bull by the horns in the drive towards developing the standard of education. He noted that the competition had reawakened students’ consciousness and interest in the study of mathematics.
