Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State will meet with the leadership of the state chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, this Friday.
The meeting, the second in about 14 days, Vanguard gathered, might not be unconnected with the 21-day ultimatum issued to the state government by organised labour to pay all outstanding salaries to its workers and pensioners.
Organised labour had in a communique, last Thursday, after a joint meeting of its affiliate unions held in Yenagoa, warned that its members would embark on strike if the government fails to settle the salary arrears at the expiry of the ultimatum.
The state government owes four months salaries to civil servants, while employees of the eight local governments are being owed about eight months’ salaries.
However, the governor in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, said the fresh meeting with the labour leaders slated for Friday would among others, discuss the welfare and future of workers and other major concerns of labour in the state.
