The National Chairman of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club (NFSC), Rev. Samuel Ikpea, has commended the proposed take over plans of the National Stadium, Surulere, by the Lagos State government.
Ikpea, made this remark on the back drop of the scheduled visit of the Minister of Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung and Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode on a tour of facilities at the abandoned stadium tomorrow.
Speaking with the press this morning in his office, Ikpea, praised Ambode for the initiative to revive the once-revered sporting edifice.
” It is a thing of joy to know that there are plans to revive this stadium which was once a pride to the country. I believe that the planned take over of the stadium would also help to improve the fortunes of Nigerian football”, he said.
He also commended the sports minister over the scheduled visit, while praying that the proposed take over bid of the state government receives the necessary support of ministry and the government.
” I want to praise Barrister Dalung on his recent moves to reposition sports in Nigeria. Let me, however, advise that he should rally all genuine stakeholders in the sports community towards achieving lofty heights for Nigerian sports, ” he added.
The National Stadium which has been dilapidated for almost two decades, has been home to an mix of bitter-sweet memories of the country’s involvement in several sports events since it was built 45 years ago.
