About one trillion naira will be saved for the federation account this year if concerted efforts are made to stop smuggling of petrol to neighbouring countries.
The Group managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation NNPC, Dr. Maikanti Baru stated this when he led other top management staff of the Corporation on a visit to the headquarters of the Nigeria Customs Service in Abuja.
Dr. Baru said between october 2017 and January this year, Nigerians experienced difficulties buying petrol due to inadequate supply of the product, the situation he attributed to smuggling as petrol meant for distribution are diverted to neighbouring countries.
Dr. Daru explained that the visit to the Customs headquarters was to seek the support of the service in putting an end to the menace.
The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, rtd Colonel Hameed Ali said the service was poised to ensure maximum security across the nation’s border.
Rtd Colonel Ali emphasized the need for a joint committee between the two bodies to find a lasting solution to the problem.
The customs CG urged the management of the NNPC to ensure strict sanctions against erring marketers to deter others from unwholesome practices.
