The Nigeria Police has issued an ultimatum of 21 days to Nigerians in possession of illegal firearms to submit them to the Force.
They announced this in a series of tweets on Monday, quoting the Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood who spoke on the mopping up of firearms by the police.
“All pump action guns of all categories and other prohibited firearms are to be returned to the Police within 21days,” Mr Moshood said. “No firearm licence will be issued or recognised.”
“Mopping up prohibited firearms and illegal weapons across the country will further compliment police efforts to guarantee the safety and security of the general public,” he added.
The Force spokesman further urged members of the public to cooperate with the police and report anyone violating the Firearms Act.
He also spoke on the abduction of some students of the Government Girls Science Technical College (GGSTC), Dapchi, by suspected Boko Haram terrorists on Monday last week in Yobe State.
According to Moshood, the short, medium and long-term security action plans of the police have been yielding positive results.
He further appealed for calm on the missing schoolgirls, saying all security chiefs in the country are on top of the situation.
