The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has officially suspended a strike it commenced two months ago.
The union directed polytechnic lecturers to resume duty today, February 13.
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics has suspended its two-month-old strike, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
ASUP National President Mr Usman Dutse confirmed this at a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja.
He said, “We have hereby decided to suspend our two-month-old strike; the decision was taken at the end of our National Executive Council meeting.
“We shall not hesitate to resume the strike should government fail to review the Memorandum of Action and ensure a full implementation before the end of May 2019.
“This is in view of the progress made in the course of the union’s negotiations with government.”
Dutse added that the revitalisation fund of N15bn demanded by the union had been noted by the Minister Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu in lieu of the NEEDS assessment.
He said government had also made a public pronouncement on the issue conveying the government’s approval of the release of the sum of money as requested.
He said, “It is expected that the funds shall be made available for disbursement to deserving institutions by April 2019.
“Also, the approval of the NEEDS assessment report shall be pursued with all diligence to ensure a sustained and effective intervention in the infrastructure and other needs of our institutions.”
ASUP went on strike in November 2017. But when it reached an agreement with the federal government to implement the recommendations of the 2014 NEEDS assessment, the strike was suspended 15 days after.
