The Senate on Tuesday declared Senator Jimoh Ibrahim’s seat vacant.
Ibrahim represented the Ondo South Senatorial District before his appointment as the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
At a plenary session presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the Senate directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a fresh election to fill the vacant seat within 30 days.
Our correspondent also reports that the Senate also passed three major agricultural bills including the Nigeria Food Reserve Agency (Establishment) Bill, 2026, the National Cassava Policy Coordination Council Bill, 2026 and the National Rice Development Council of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2026.
Presenting the reports on the three bills, the Chairman of the Committee on Agricultural Production, Services, and Rural Development, Senator Saliu Mustapha (Kwara Central), said the legislation is aimed at boosting food security across the country.
Additionally, the Senate passed a bill for its second reading seeking to repeal the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Establishment) Act, 2019 (as amended) and enact the Nigeria Police Trust Fund Act, 2026.
The executive bill is designed to provide modern equipment, enhanced training, and improved welfare for the Nigeria Police Force and address other related security matters.
