Switzerland became the first country in the World Cup to come from behind and beat Serbia 2-1 on Friday.
Swiss winger Xherdan Shaqiri’s sensational strike handed the men from the Alps the second spot in group E.
Serbia gained a stranglehold over Switzerland in less than five minutes as striker Aleksandar Mitrovic planted a powerful header into the net from eight yards off a Tardic cross to hand the Balkans the lead.
Despite Swiss possession and dominance, nothing came of their endeavours.
In the second half, more Swiss pressure resulted in a goal with midfielder Ghanit Xhaka scoring a blinder against Serb keeper Vladimir Stojkovic in the 53rd minute.
Then the final revival was complete on the dot of 90 minutes as Shaqiri beat an offside trap by scurrying 40 yards forward, kept a cool head and slid the ball past the advancing keeper Stojkovic to seal a memorable win.
Switzerland now have 4 points like group leaders Brazil, but are only behind by goal difference.
A win or draw against already eliminated Costa Rica will see them through to the next round.
That means it will be a brutal encounter when Serbia face Brazil, with the Balkans needing an outright win to stay in Russia.
