The Director-General, Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Dr Joseph Odumodu, on Wednesday, reiterated its commitment to standardise made-in-Nigeria paint products.
Odumodu said in Lagos that SON was aware of the challenges of standardisation being faced by paint manufacturers.
He said that the prompt passage of the Made-in-Nigeria Patronage Bill would reduce the challenges in the manufacturing industry as whole.
“Every nation cannot have all the standards we require, and we already received that information and we are working on ensuring that we develop them.
“But for now, even if we don’t have standards, there are standards that are international, either ISO, or other national standards which we can use.
“I know particularly that the paint industry has a lot of challenges, and we are also working.
“I think what we need to do basically is to promote the made-in-Nigeria Patronage Bill in the National Assembly; if it goes through, then most of these challenges will be a thing of the past.
“The challenge is Nigerian companies, because of power, and infrastructure deficiencies cannot compete effectively with foreign products.
“And people are busy bringing all these products, unfortunately we are not able to monitor, because we are not even at the ports.
“So a lot of products are coming into Nigeria and we do you know warehouse monitoring, we go to the market, but how much effective can you be, doing that.
“ So, a lot is changing, and I tell you, the Goodluck Jonathan government is committed to transformation.
