Over thousands of Anglicans faithful were, on Monday, on streets in a peaceful protest over the demolition of a church building in Nkwelle-Ezunaka community in Oyi Local Government Area of Monday by unknown persons.
Nigerian Tribune learnt that on Thursday, suspected hoodlums came around 11.00 p.m and demolished Ebenezer Anglican Church, Oyolu-Oze, Nkwelle–Ezunaka community in Oyi Local Government Area of the state.
It was also gathered that the community had, for some time now, insisted that the said demolished building belonged to it and not the church.
The protesters, who included members and priests, marched through Old Market, New Market, Old Cemetery, New Cemetery, Oguta and Awka roads, as well as other major streets, causing untold gridlock within the metropolis.
Reverend Joseph Nweke, who led the protest, noted that there must be an end to the endless demolition of worship centres belonging to the Anglican Church within Onitsha and its environs.
He added that the authorities must fish-out persons or hoodlums bent on frustrating the Anglican Church in Anambra.
“We have been diplomatic all along, even when that of the worship centres at Fegge community, as well as the Bishop Crowther Memorial Primary School was demolished.
“But we are saying enough is enough; we have equal right to be in the state just like our sister denominations,” he said. Nigerian Tribune
