Some members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Anambra State, yesterday, staged a protest at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Abuja asking the commission to respect a February 2016 Supreme Court judgment.
The protesters are the aggrieved House of Representatives candidates of the Ejike Oguebego-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party.
They slammed INEC for its continued delay to act on the Supreme Court judgment in respect of the rightful winners of the National Assembly seats in Anambra State in the 2015 general elections.
Speaking on behalf of other aggrieved candidates, Hon. Tony Office said the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu was wrong to have denied them audience despite several letters seeking to meet with him. While alleging INEC’s bias, Office accused the former Acting Chairman of INEC, Amina Zakari, of being responsible for their plight.
According to him, it was Ms Zakari who superintended over INEC at the time their rights were trampled upon.
The protesters were prevented from gaining access to INEC premises and after about an hour, the leader of INEC security team asked their representative to come in and deliver their letter.
Although the National Chairman of INEC was not on ground to address the protesters, the Director of Security of INEC, Shettima Ngliladar, assured them that their demands would be passed on to the Chairman.
A case for fresh politicians
Meantime, the Progressive Peoples Alliance, PPA, in Anambra State has called on voters in Anambra Central senatorial zone to shun those it described as old politicians who have been tried in various offices in the past and try fresh ones if they want the desired result.
Leader of the party in the state, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo told reporters at Umuchu in Aguata local government area that most of the politicians seeking to represent the people of Anambra Central senatorial zone in the postponed re-run election had all been entrusted with public offices before and should therefore give way to the new and fresh hands.
According to Ezeemo, who was the PPA governorship candidate in the last election in Anambra State, those angling to represent the zone on the platform of the ruling and opposition parties in the state had their chances, adding that PPA has positioned itself with a creditable candidate that can adequately represent the zone and the state in the senate.
