Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, yesterday announced the extension of the free education policy of his administration to non-indigenes in Imo State University.
This was just as he had instructed the university management not to collect acceptance fee of N50,000 or any other levies from any student of the state university.
The governor gave the directives while commissioning the N150 million ultra-modern recreation park at the Imo State University campus built by the Pro-Chancellor of the university, Mazi Clement Owunna.
He said his government would continue to give the free education policy a human face, adding that government would not be concerned with certain charges such as students’ identity cards, medicals, text books, among others.
He urged the students to develop a passion for education and advised them to refrain from cultism and indecent dressing, especially as the nation was yearning for leaders with good conduct in both learning and character.
Okorocha commended Owunna and the University Governing Council for their sacrifices towards the development of the institution.
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie, said the recreation park was constructed and donated to the university by Mazi Owunna through a foundation known as Chief Peter Sunday Owunna Memorial Foundation (CPSOMF).
Handing over the project, Mazi Owunna said the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the foundation conceptualised and developed the recreation park to create an environment that would impact positively on the students and staff as well as add dynamism to the university ambience and environment.
