Students of Nigerian universities will no longer be allowed to graduate with pass degrees, Vice Chancellor of the Usmanu Danfordiyo University, Sokoto Professor Abubakar Abdu Zuru, said yesterday.
He said the new policy was in line with a directive of the National Universities Commission (NUC) which also pegged “Third class” as the minimum class of degree with effect from the 2013/2014 academic session. He spoke at the matriculation ceremony for 4,133 students admitted for the 2014/2015 academic session in the university yesterday. Zuru however said the decision had far reaching implications on the grading system because the minimum pass mark in the university would now be 45 percent (D-grade) meaning any mark below that is an automatic carry over.
