Anambra State Governor Chief Willie Obiano, yesterday assured the state workers of regular payment of salaries as well as entitlements including promotions despite the present economic downturn in the country.
Speaking at the commemoration of Civil Service day reiterated in the state, Obiano, described the civil service as the cornerstone of his administration, saying that no responsible government goes to sleep when its workforce was having problems.
He stressed that in the past one year of his administration, he had continued to demonstrate a great deal of sensitivity to the plight of workers in the state.
In his words, “A few weeks after I was sworn in as your governor, we took bold steps to look into the difficulties workers were having in transporting themselves to Awka from various parts of the state. “Consequently, we provided four buses to convey workers from Onitsha, Otuocha, Nnewi and Ekwulobia to and from Awka.
We also donated three buses to NLC, NUC and JNC. “Similarly, less than one year into my administration, we increased workers’ salaries by 15 per cent.
The governor however observed that even with the current economic depression experienced in the country, his government was able to clear the salaries arrears of the Water Corporation staff that for three years, saying that he was making effort to ensure that promotions and conversion of some categories of workers were done in their due time.
