Progressives Peoples Alliance, (PPA) gubernatorial candidate in Abia State, Sir Chikwe Udensi, has denied reports that he has withdrawn from the race.
Love FM, an Umuahia-based radio station, had on Sunday reportedly announced that Udensi had stepped down for All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), candidate, Dr. Alex Otti in the governorship election slated for February 28.
A visibly angry Udensi, who reacted to the news story at the Igbere residence of Chief Nnanna Uzor Kalu, during the latter’s child dedication and baptism, expressed disappointment over the news item, saying it was unfortunate that it came from who should know better and were expected to behave decently.
“I have called their news editor to express my profound dissatisfaction with that broadcast and I hope they will retract it. I have not stepped down for anybody. In fact, they should be the one to step down for me,” he said.
Udensi also noted that the problem facing journalism today was the inability to verify stories properly before going to press. He advised the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation to look into the development to ensure balanced and accurate information.
When Daily Sun called Love FM for its reaction, a member of staff of the radio station said the news item was twisted; maintaining that what they actually broadcast was that Otti was pleading with Udensi to step down for him.
Udensi, however, dismissed the claim, saying what was said was verifiable from the text of the news. He maintained that it was deliberately disseminated to deceive the electorate.
