The wife of Enugu State Governor, Her Excellency, Mrs Monica Ugwuanyi,
has urged the women in the state to use the occasion of this year’s Women
August Meeting to renew their commitment to the promotion of
love, tolerance, peace and national development.
Mrs Ugwuanyi in a speech at the Home and Abroad August return of
the Catholic Women Organisation, Nsukka Diocese, said the meeting
offered women the opportunity to deliberate on the role of women as
agents of change in the society.
She added that such deliberations during the meeting would help women
understand their decisive and supportive roles to their husbands,
children, family members, the church and the society at large.
In her words, “August is a period when the entire Igbo race celebrates
womanhood, as we have gathered here to celebrate ourselves, to take
stock of our activities in the past year, to chart a new course for
the year ahead, we must rededicate ourselves to values that promote
love, tolerance, trust, peace and unity in the state,” Mrs Ugwuanyi
said.
Extending her good wishes to the women, the First Lady assured that
this administration was committed to the upliftment of women of
Enugu State, particularly Nsukka women. She expressed the hope that
this year’s meeting will arouse the passion of women towards greater
heights, enjoining them not to allow their individual differences to
be a source of conflict and distrust.
In a remark, the Diocesan President of Catholic Women Organisation ,
Prof Rose Onah, noted that the meeting provides a platform for women
to deliberate on issues that promote peace and integration of
national development.
She commended Mrs Ugwuanyi for identifying with
the women folk, promising that the women will continue to pray for
peace and stability in the state.
Earlier in an Assumption Service at St. Theresa’s Parish, the Catholic
Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, Most Rev Godfrey Onah noted that August is
the month of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Assumption of the
Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Bishop charged the women to emulate mother
Mary who surrendered herself for the will of God to be done in her
life despite all oppositions.
He said “we need our mothers to change our society, women be
brave and rise up to the challenge of womanhood, try to make a
difference and correct the ills in the society”.
In a related development, the wife of Enugu State Governor, Her
Excellency, Mrs Monica Ugwuanyi attended the grand ceremony of 2015
Imo Women’s August Meeting at the Hero Square Owerre, Imo State.
The occasion attracted many First Ladies from across the length and
breadth of the country, including the wife of the Vice President of
the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Her Excellency Mrs Dolapo Osibanjo
who was also the special guest of honour.
The women from the 27 local governments of Imo State came in their
thousands to showcase their rich cultural heritage. The women added
glamour to the occasion through their various performances which
included the Oso mmiri, egwu ukwu, match past and lots more.
Earlier before the grand ceremony, Mrs Ugwuanyi accompanied her Imo
State counterpart, Her Excellency Mrs Nneoma Nkechi Okorocha to the
commissioning of her (Mrs Okorocha) pet projects which included Nneoma
Nkechi Rochas Okorocha Skill Acquisition Centre and She Needs A Roof
Project (SNARP).
The projects were designed to alleviate the suffering of
the destitutes.
