Following the renewed clamour for local government autonomy being championed by the National Union of Local Government Employee(NULGE), a former Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu has kicked against the notion, saying most of them cannot function effectively.
Aliyu disclosed this on Monday in Abuja at the national launch of the 2015 Nigerian States Budget Transparency Survey Results conducted by the Civil Resource Development and Documentation Centre (CIRDDOC).
According to him, considering the widening economic gaps in the country with workers being owed salaries, only a few local governments can truly be autonomous to meet their monthly wage bills efficiently.
Aliyu argued that through the joint accounts system, the local governments that are weak in meeting their responsibilities get a kind of bail-out from the pool of funds, especially in payment of primary school teachers salary and meeting other basic administrative expenses. Thisday
