Monday was a busy day for delegates to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) electoral congress, which holds Tuesday at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Warri, Delta State.
Most of the delegates, whose responsibility it is to elect a new president for the federation, were busy consulting and listening to the candidates for the various positions in the NFF board.
Before now there were apprehension about the possibility of tbe election coming to pass, following the spate of court cases threatening to scuttle the polls, but the delegates and the candidates went about their businesses intent on seeing the protracted process to an end.
Already, representatives of the world football governing body, FIFA, and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), led by Ghana’s Football Federation (GFA) president, Kwesi Nyantaki, have arrived in Warri for the elective congress.
Among the candidates vying to replace outgoing NFF president, Aminu Maigari, are Amaju Pinnick from Delta State, Amanze Uchegbulam from Imo State, Taiwo Ogunjobi (Osun), Shehu Dikko (Kaduna) and Dominic Iorfa of Benue State. Candidates for the first vice president position are Emeka inyama (Imo), Seyi Akinwunmi of Lagos State, Adamu Shehu (Kaduna) and Suleyman Muazu from Sokoto State. The delegates will also elect zonal representatives on the board. Speaking on the preparation for the polls, NFF Electoral Committee Chairman, Barrister Ebomhe, said all was set for the polls, adding that almost everybody that expressed interest in tne polls were cleared to test their popularity among the electorate. He, however, revealed that some candidates, including Chris Giwa, Obinna Ogba, Effiong Johnson, among others, who were hitherto cleared by the former electoral committee did not indicate interest in today’s polls.
