The United Kingdom has called on the Federal Government to ensure the speedy implementation of the agreement on migration returns and prisoners transfer programme it signed with Nigeria.
The Head of a UK delegation, Ms. Mary Calam, who said this during a visit to the Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, on Tuesday in Abuja, explained that her country was interested in working with Nigeria to actualise the terms of the various agreements between the two countries.
Calam stated that the UK would want to partner Nigeria and work against the shared threats against both nations, noting that both countries could work together in the future.
She said that her boss, the Home Secretary, had asked her and other officials to take responsibilities for issues in key countries which share the same historical relationship with the UK.
Responding, Moro stated that Nigeria and the UK were virtually on the same page on various issues, stressing that the two nations “share the same sentiments on terrorism issues and have signed various agreements including the one on immigration returns and prisoners transfer.”
The minister said Nigeria would work assiduously to implement the shared commitments, stressing that the Federal Government was committed to the prisoners transfer agreement.
According to him, the National Assembly has passed a legislation on the prisoners swap programme, noting that the various prison formations, including the ones in Lagos, Ibadan and Ilorin, are being renovated.
He said, “Ongoing projects at Kuje and in Ibadan, Lagos and Ilorin, are being fast-tracked for the implementation of the prisoners swap programme.” – Punch.
