Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has said his administration would give priority to graduates of Lagos State University (LASU) in its employment schemes.
The governor made this known on Thursday, the last day of LASU’s 20th Convocation Ceremonies, where he also installed Justice George Oguntade (Retired) as the university’s fourth Chancellor.
Ambode said his administration made LASU one of its major priorities because it was important to position the institution as a world-class centre of learning devoid of crisis.
He said: “Today, good reasoning has prevailed over the crisis. Our vision is to have an institution whose products will be job creators rather than job seekers. The mission of the state government is to make LASU first in research and innovations.”
In his response, the newly installed Chancellor, Justice Oguntade, thanked the governor for finding him worthy of the honour.
Oguntade said: “We have a tomorrow to plan for, how will our tomorrow be? LASU has been enjoying the goodwill of past governors till date but what then do we lack?
“One thing that we lack is peace, but today, that peace has returned and must be maintained. Once we maintain it, we will get there.”
Meanwhile, 24-year-old Michael Arowosegbe on Wednesday emerged best-graduating student with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.86.
The graduate of Biochemistry, while giving the valedictory disclosed that his father had once served as a security guard at the university.
He said, “Many of my friends and colleagues never knew that he once worked as a contract staff, attached to the Campus Marshal. I witnessed a students’ protest while in 100 level, where he was stoned. I could not cry.
“As if that was not enough, another incident occurred on November 9, 2012, which changed his life to this day. He had an accident on a bike, while on duty on campus, where he hit his head and back against the university gate. He could not move any of his limbs initially.”
Governor Ambode also commissioned, on Thursday, three newly completed projects including the LASU radio station donated by Sir Adebutu Kensington and the Faculty of Science building. – Tribune.
