Lagos State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday held its Local Government Congress across the state, with findings indicating that members held parallel exercises to pick officers for the available party offices in majority of the council areas of Lagos.
The exercise, it was gathered, was almost marred in Lagos Mainland as some members led by a national officer of the party were opposed to election to pick officers, insisting that the positions should be reserved only for their group, while the others maintained that election should hold.
It, however, took the intervention of policemen before sanity could be restored at Akinwunmi Street, Alagomeji, Yaba, the venue of the exercise.
The other group, while insisting on an election, said the issue of sharing of positions among groups in the party had been abolished by PDP national leadership, adding that that was the same process adopted at the ward congress.
Speaking on the outcome of the Congress, Dr Tokunbo Pearse, who is contesting the state chairmanship seat, expressed satisfaction, while also commending the large turnout for the exercise.
According to him, the impressive turnout is an indication that the party still enjoyed the support of Lagosians, pointing out that the protesters were those against the conduct of Congress.
“The turnout of party members for the Congress was impressive and that was an indication that people still believe in the party. – The Sun.
